Almost There

She's sitting by the window in the grey autumn light when I arrive.

"Hello, Mum."

She turns to look at me. A suspicious flicker of recognition, and then, "Who are you? What do you want?"

"I'm Andrew, Mum. Your son, remember?"

"Don't be daft. Andy's at school. Are you his teacher?"

I retreat into the kitchen and put the kettle on. She calls out to me. "Don't forget – I'm down to one sugar now, Andrew."

"I've not forgotten."

I take the tea into her and sit down. She gives me an encouraging smile.

"Andy will be home from school soon."
